Four to six weeks is comfortable for a local move. For an international removal, or for any move in July and August, allow eight weeks or more.

Is my furniture insured during the move?

Professional companies carry goods-in-transit and liability cover. Always check the limit per item and the claims procedure before you sign.

Can you store my belongings between properties?

Yes. Storage in Malaga can be arranged for a few days or several months, which is common when the new property is not ready.

What does the quote include?

Ask every company to state the number of movers, the vehicle size, the estimated hours, whether packing materials are included and what happens if the job overruns.

Removal costs on the Costa del Sol: what to expect

There is no single price, but there are patterns worth knowing before you compare quotes:

• Local moves within Malaga province are priced by volume and labour hours rather than distance. A one-bedroom flat with a lift is a half-day job; a villa is a full day with three or four movers.
• Lifts and access are the single biggest variable. A third floor with no lift, or a hillside urbanisation where the lorry parks two hundred metres away, can cost more than the transport itself.
• International moves are priced per cubic metre, with a minimum. Groupage brings the price down considerably if your dates are flexible.
• July and August are the worst months to move on the Costa del Sol. Availability drops and prices rise across the province.

What to check before you sign

1. Is the price fixed or hourly? For a household move, always ask for a fixed price in writing.
2. What is the insurance limit per item? A total cover figure means little if the per-item cap is low and you are moving something valuable.
3. How many movers and what size vehicle? It should be stated, not assumed.
4. Are packing materials included or billed separately?
5. For international moves: is customs clearance included? This is the most common source of unexpected charges on Spain to UK moves.
6. What happens if the job overruns? Get it in writing.

Moving out of Spain: a realistic timeline

• Eight weeks before: get quotes and book. Summer slots go early.
• Six weeks: decide what travels and what gets sold or donated. Shipping costs by volume, so this is where you save real money.
• Four weeks: prepare the valued inventory for customs if your destination is outside the EU.
• Two weeks: cancel utilities, redirect post, and deal with your padrón and NIE-related paperwork.
• Moving week: keep passports, documents and valuables with you. They should never travel in the container.

Storage between properties

Completion dates rarely line up, especially when a sale in one country funds a purchase in another. Short-term storage in Malaga is usually cheaper than delaying the whole move, and most firms will collect, inventory and store your belongings in sealed containers until you are ready.
